Last week, YESRUD Uganda participated in a one-week capacity development workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa, organized by ITOCA(Information Training & Outreach Centre for Africa) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) under the theme “Designing Sustainable Capacity Development Projects Targeting Youth in Agriculture and Rural Development“. The workshop was scheduled for 11th-15th May 2026.

A total of 14 organizations from 10 East and South African countries were represented, with YESRUD representing Uganda.
The goal of the workshop was to strengthen the capacities of youth organizations and other relevant non-state actor organizations supporting youth in agriculture and rural development initiatives, to be able to design, deliver, and track sustainable capacity development projects targeting youth in agriculture and rural development, thereby effectively contributing to the transformation of agrifood systems and the achievement of the SDGs.

The workshop was very practical, interactive, and insightful thanks to the organizing team.
Towards the end of the workshop, all organizations were tasked to develop capacity development project ideas, and a total of 14 project ideas were presented. This was done to assess the participants’ understanding of the concept and provide the necessary technical guidance.
With the rapid rise in the African and Global population, empowering youth-led and youth-serving non-state organizations that support youth in agriculture and rural development is inevitable.
We appreciate all the technical, financial, and material support provided by ITOCA and FAO and look forward to incorporating the concepts learned into the design and implementation of our projects.
